Signlo — Copyright and takedowns

Post what is yours to post. If someone has posted your work on Signlo without permission, this page tells you how to have it removed. If your content was removed and you believe that was wrong, it tells you how to dispute it.

1. Reporting infringement

Send a notice to support@signlo.com with COPYRIGHT in the subject line, or by post to the address at the foot of this page. Under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)) your notice must include all of the following, or we cannot act on it:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the work you say was infringed. If several works are covered by one notice, a representative list.
  3. A link to the specific content on Signlo, precise enough for us to find it. "Somewhere on this person's profile" is not enough.
  4. Your name, address, telephone number, and email address.
  5. A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or are authorised to act on the owner's behalf.

We remove or disable content expeditiously when we receive a complete notice, and we tell the person who posted it, including a copy of your notice. Your notice, including your name and contact details, is passed to them. If that concerns you, consider using an agent's address.

Misrepresentation has consequences. Section 512(f) makes anyone who knowingly misrepresents that material is infringing liable for damages, including costs and legal fees. Do not use a copyright notice to remove criticism you dislike.

2. Disputing a removal (counter-notice)

If your content was removed and you believe it was a mistake or that the use was authorised — including fair use — send a counter-notice to the same address, containing:

  1. Your signature.
  2. Identification of the removed content and where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address, and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the US Federal District Court for your district, or, if you are outside the United States, for any district in which Signlo may be found, and that you will accept service from the person who gave the original notice.

We forward your counter-notice to the original complainant. If they do not tell us within 10 to 14 business days that they have filed a court action, we may restore the content.

3. Repeat infringers

We terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe. Notices that are withdrawn or successfully disputed do not count against an account.

4. Sign language, and what copyright does not cover

Two things are worth saying plainly, because they come up here more than on other platforms.

A signed performance is a work. A signed poem, song translation, story, or interpretation is creative work belonging to the person who made it, whether or not it was ever written down. Re-posting someone's signed performance without permission is the same as re-posting their writing.

A sign is not. Individual signs, including name-signs, are vocabulary of a living language and are not anyone's property. Copyright is not the route for a complaint about someone using a sign. If the problem is impersonation or harassment, report it under the Community Guidelines, which is the faster and more appropriate route.

5. Trademarks and other rights

For trademark complaints, or other rights not covered above, write to support@signlo.com describing the right you hold, the registration if there is one, and the specific content at issue.

6. Designated agent

Signlo, Inc. has designated an agent with the United States Copyright Office to receive notices of claimed infringement under 17 U.S.C. §512(c)(2). The designation is listed in the DMCA Designated Agent Directory.
